The Lepenski Vir archaeological site is in Djerdap (east Serbia), on a low Danube bank terrace. On a rocky bank, objects of religious architecture and monumental stone sculptures were discovered, dating from 7000 to 6000 B.C.
The houses and shrines are of a truncated circle sector at angles from 30 to 60 degrees. Around hearths there were places sculptures made of large grain sandstone boulders, showing a human figure, originally only a head, decorated with concentric circles motifs, spirals and eights. In a later phase, the sculptures are more of a human figure, becoming idols. Archaeological investigations (1965-1970) discovered about 136 objects. So as not to get flooded when the Djerdap G power plant was made operable, Lepenski Vir was moved to a higher level.
