A legend says that the Bodjani Monastery was founded in 1487 by certain Bogdan, a merchant from Dalmatia. The present monastery church is devoted to the Presentation of the Virgin and was built in 1722 by Mihail Tamisvarlija. It is a one-nave building with a semi-circular altar apse and shallow choir spaces, above which rise baroque frontons with volutes. It has a barrel vaulting with a massive cupola laying on four free-standing columns.

A tall baroque bell tower was added between 1755-56, when the gable walls were built. The frescoes date from 1737, painted by Hristifor Zefarovic, who introduced new western ideas in the traditional Byzantine art, thus starting the Baroque period of the Srbian 18th century art. The iconostasis screen, with numerous baroque elements, is a joint work of Russian painters with Jov Vasilijevic leading the works and the Serbian artists, featuring Vasilije Ostojic. In the period 1786 – 1810 the complex acquired its present appearance. Investigations, conservation and restoration, started in the 1960’s, have continued in 2007 as part of the “Centuries of Bač” Project.
