Archaeological site of Mediana is on the outskirts of an ancient town of Naisus, the present day Niš. The residence of the Roman emperors was built in the early 4th century, in the period of Constantine the Great.
A villa with a peristyle covered the central area, thermae on the west side and smaller nymphaeum. West of the villa was a granary and on the south a water tower. Luxury buildings, decorated with mosaics and frescoes, occupied the area around the villa and peristyle. On the south-west border of Mediana, there was a small village settlement with built communication roads. At the end of 4th century Mediana was devastated in a fire and then in 441 completely destroyed. Archaeological excavations and conservation works have been going on, with breaks, since 1960’s.
