The fortified town of Kaljaja is situated above the present town of Prizren, Kosovo and Metohija, on a hill with a vantage strategic position.
The fortification is divided into the Upper and Lower Town with an entrance on its west ramparts. The Upper Town was an elevated area in the south-east section and was protected with special ramparts towards north and west. As it was in use for centuries, the fortress changed its lords who were pulling it down, reconstructing and extended it. There are two periods of its construction: the mediaeval (12th century) and the Turkish one.
